The pre-filter is the workhorse. This is the outer mesh screen that catches all the large particles: dust, pet hair, lint, and fibres.
Why it's critical: A clogged pre-filter chokes the machine. It blocks airflow, forcing the fan to work harder, reducing efficiency and wearing out the motor.
How to do it: Most pre-filters are designed to be washable. Gently remove the outer panel, take out the pre-filter, and wash it under lukewarm water. You can also use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Crucially, let it dry completely before reinstalling.
Frequency: Do this every 2-4 weeks.
